Dr Karl is coming to the Coast!

6 August 2010

Can you spell Kruszelnicki? I can’t, so let’s call him Dr. Karl. Anyway, Dr. Karl will be coming to the Robina Community Centre on Wednesday, August 11 at 1pm. No doubt he will be discussing all things dinosaur. You can grab his new book, Dinosaurs Aren’t Dead – The shocking story of dinosaur evolution from your local GC library. Be warned it is a Junior Non Fiction title but it’s still a really good read. I am reading it as I write and I can’t wait to see his amazing science brain in action!

Meet and hear Dr. Karl at this free event for kids aged over 8. Be sure to book!!!!

Bookings: 5581 1600

If you can’t make it on Wednesday have a look at the Dr. Karl website or catch him on Triple J. So clever!

14 June 2010

Are you staring down the barrel of long, boring afternoons with nothing to do?

You should get out more.

And we know just the place……

That’s right – your local branch library!

Gold Coast libraries have a host of new afternoon activities for teens. Choose from:

  • Build your own website – make your own virtual space.
  • Re-boot – gaming, manga, web 2.0 and more.
  • Chill out and knit – learn to cross needles and whip that wool.
  • Speed Scrabble – no board, just fast, furious and fun.

Click over to the latest online calendar of events and have a look at page 6 for all the details on “active arvos”. Or grab a copy of the booklet next time you’re visiting your local branch library. Drop in at a session – they’re running all through June, July and August at Elanora, Nerang, Robina and Southport Branch Libraries.

Look! Clay Animation Workshops!

19 April 2010

You won’t believe your eyes!
Have a look at these films made by Gold Coast teens this week, at Broadbeach and Nerang Branch Libraries.

Thanks to Mark Richards, from The Art of Comics, for running these workshops and putting the films up on the Aus TOON experience.

Almost Holidays!

3 December 2009

Not long now until the end of the school year, but have you thought about what you will be doing over the school holidays?  What about your younger brothers and sisters?  Want to know the perfect way to get them out from underneath your feet??

Take them to the library!!  I’m really, really not joking!

This summer we have so much happening at the Gold Coast City Council Branch libraries, that it will be hard to choose what to do!

For younger folk out there we have a Summer Reading Quest and all sorts of events and activities.  Come along to the Worm Squirm (where ability to touch worms is essential!) or Create your own storybook character!  The 6 – 12 year olds in your family will be glad you went!  Check here for the December to February Calendar of events – your guide to a fun-filled Summer!!

But what about you?  A little older than 12 but still wanting to get into the library fun?  There are plenty of things for you to!! For example, have you ever wanted to watch Sound of Music on a big screen?  Book in for December 17 at Robina Branch Library and you will be able to see it for FREE!!  Yep – FREE!! How about learning how to create Christmas Cards and gift boxes?  That is being held at Burleigh Waters Branch Library on 3rd of December – book in fast!!

So with a little bit of planning – you will have your whole holiday filled with lots of fun-filled activities and events… Just make sure that you book in to avoid disappointment!

What are you looking forward to over the school holidays?

Friday five: Five reasons to love Winter

19 June 2009

When anyone asks, I say I’m a Winter person. In Summer as the humidity soars, I complain about the heat and find my only comfort comes from ice cream. Lots and lots of ice cream. That is until Winter rolls around and I am very quickly reminded how cold it gets (and we live on the Gold Coast!)… and I seem to forget this every year.

As the mornings get colder and the days shorter, we have to remember to be positive! I’m going to share with you five reasons why I love Winter. Please do the same!

  • Comfort food Casseroles, pies, curries, cakes, puddings… I should stop now. It’s only 11am and I’m feeling incredibly hungry 😦
  • Winter movie season The big Summer movies relased in the US become our movies for the July school holidays. Less than 1 month until Half-Blood Prince!
  • Knitting It would make more sense for me to do this in Summer so I have things to wear in Winter, but it just doesn’t feel right. It’s cheap, it’s easy and if you don’t know how, it’s easy to teach yourself the basics using books from the library.
  • Hot chocolate Yes this could go under the ‘comfort food’ category, but it’s really important for it to have its own mention! Marshmallows are compulsory.

And lastly but most importantly…

  • School holiday activities The July school holidays are always such a busy and exciting place for Gold Coast libraries. To make sure you don’t miss out on our creepy and crawly activities, check out our calendar of events online to see what’s on. Bookings are a must of you want to secure your place, and activities are filling up quickly!

The economic crisis, not enough hours at your part-time job, too much else to buy?  All solid reasons for not updating your accessories lately… But have you thought of making your own?

Bead It! A beading workshop to be held at the Helensvale Branch Library on Thursday 28 May 4.30pm – 5.30pm, will give attendees a heads up on how to create cute, colourful (and most importantly – cheap) accesssories to update any outfit. Contact Helensvale Branch Library to book your place – places are still available!

If you are at your part-time job, and won’t be able to make it, why not borrow a book or dvd, and learn to make some accessories in the comfort of your own home!

Try these to begin with!

Easter holiday events @ your library!

9 April 2009

What do you have planned for these school holidays? Are you coming to the library? Why not? We have lots of great things planned!

The libraries are starting to buzz with holiday activities. Across the Gold Coast, the libraries will be filled with paper planes, kites and a variety of other inventions. Check our calendar of events to see where you can grow a paper garden or steer a paper plane sky high.

Why not relax with some yoga at Helensvale? The Active and Healthy team will be presenting this fun session at Helensvale Branch Library on Thursday 16th April from 10.30am. If you want something a little more energetic why not try a drumming workshop at Southport Branch Library (10am Friday 17 April) or a Bollywood dancing session (11am Tuesday 14 April) at Runaway Bay Library? Make sure you book in fast to these sessions – you don’t want to miss out!! (Call your local branch library to book in quickly!)

But wait, that’s not all! Why not take a look at what is happening at your local library…. You never know what you will find!
