Bollywood comes to Runaway Bay Branch Library

During the Easter holidays, Runaway Bay Branch Library was dancing to the sounds of Bollywood. Thirty children and teenagers turned up to learn and enjoy the sounds and moves of this fun and addictive style of dance. We discovered there is more to Bollywood dancing than “changing the light bulb” and “patting the dog”! Bollywood dance is about storytelling and the dance style itself is a fusion of a whole lot of different dance types including belly dancing, hip hop and classical Indian dance, it is fun and can be cheesy at the same time AND it is a fantastic workout.

I was so inspired by it that I got a group of friends together and we tried to reproduce some of the dance scenes from Bride and Prejudice. We won’t be performing anytime soon but it was great fun. Thankfully there are a number of dance schools on the Gold Coast that teach Bollywood dancing for all age groups that could help us improve our moves.

Also, the Bollywood movie industry is often filming here on the Gold Coast so if your moves are good enough you could audition for one of the movies and take your newly acquired skills to a new level.

In the meantime why not hire out some Bollywood movies and replicate the scenes with a group of friends and keep checking Council’s Active and Healthy program for the next lot of Bollywood dance sessions.
