Is Bond, James Bond the coolest spy ever?

by

The flash cars, the beautiful girls, the amazing gadgets and a licence to do almost anything, or in some cases everything.

In 2008, not many men could get away with half of what Mr Bond does. So with the release of the new film Quantum of Solace, I thought why not reflect on the phenomenon that is Bond, James Bond.

For those of you who are not in the “no” or should I say “Dr. No.” James Bond is the character created by author Ian Fleming. Fleming was working as a British journalist for London’s The Daily Express when he created the Bond character in the 1953 novel Casino Royale. This would start a phenomenon that spurred Fleming to write a further 12 novels and two short story collections. Even after his death in 1964 the adventures of Bond were continued by authors such as Kingsley Amis (as Robert Markham), John Gardener and again in 2008 by Sebastian Faulks. Fleming’s creation has become a trend with a multitude of websites for the enthusiast. Check out James Bond fan club – it’s strictly, of course, “For your eyes only“. As with all movies, the books are sometimes better and very different from their screen adaptations and die-hard fans would agree this is the case for some of the earlier Bond films.

All this talk about men – what about the ladies? No, I’m not talking about Bond girls – that’s a post of its own. I think that it’s also fair to mention a female (real-life) war spy from our own backyard. If you’ve never read anything about Nancy Wake I challenge you to give it a go. Her inspiring autobiography The White Mouse is an example of girl power 1940s style.

Some fascinating Bond facts:

  • Did you know the character of James Bond was named after an American ornithologist (a Caribbean bird expert). Ian Fleming was rather keen on bird watching.
  • Goldeneye was the name of Flemings Jamaican estate where he holidayed.
  • James Bond’s parents were Andrew Bond a Scotsman and Monique Delacroix who was Swiss.

Anyway, back to our original question: Is Mr James Bond the coolest spy ever? – well, that’s a question that only you can answer… So make your opinion count in our poll!

I’ve heard it suggested on a number of occasions that Modesty Blaise is the best female equivalent to James Bond… what do you reckon?
